Issue

Can smart cards be used with PASSPORT to provide secure client authentication to our host?

Solution

Although the SSL certificate on a smart card may not be accessed directly from a PASSPORT session, if the certificate is imported into the Windows Certificate Store, it may then be used. Follow the steps below to accomplish this:

  1. Choose Start®Run, type mmc then click OK.
  2. Select the Add/Remove Snap-in command from the File menu.
  3. Click the Add button then choose Certificates from the list.
  4. Click Add, Finish, Close then OK.
  5. Expand the Certificates store, right-click Personal, choose All Tasks then Import.
  6. Browse for the certificate on the smart card then complete the Certificate Import Wizard.

Once the certificate has been imported, configure your PASSPORT session to use the certificate:
