What is a subscription license?

A subscription license includes the software license, software maintenance, product upgrades and access to technical and developer support for a period of one year. Some refer to this license model as 'software as a service' (SaaS). A subscription license must be renewed on an annual basis and is similar to a lease. In the event a license isn't renewed, the software expires and can no longer be used.

What are the advantages of subscription licensing?

There are several advantages when acquiring software using a subscription license. These include the following:

• Lower Initial Cost - Instead of paying a high up-front acquisition cost for software licenses and/or maintenance and support, the cost is evenly spread across the life time use of the software.
• Lower Risk - If the use of the software is discontinued, there is no substantial loss from a large up-front acquisition fee. In our experience, many projects that use this type of solution can be very tactical. If so, subscription licensing is ideal.
