Frequently Asked Questions

Terminal Emulation Pricing, Licensing and Support

What is the difference between a Zephyr perpetual software license and an annual Zephyr subscription license?

A Zephyr subscription license is an all-inclusive package that bundles the terminal emulation software, software maintenance (patches), technical support and all product upgrades, including major releases, into a fee-based plan that covers a specific period of time (generally 1 to 5 years).

Subscription licenses are available for organizations with 100 or more users and are renewed on an annual basis (if you have a 1 year license). In the event you do not renew your subscription license, the software expires.

The appeal of the subscription license is that the per-year cost per unit is considerably less than what you would pay from a traditional terminal emulation provider such as Attachmate or IBM. What's more, it includes everything. Organizations that like to have their applications covered by a support plan are ideal candidates for a Zephyr subscription license and the majority of Zephyr customers license PASSPORT using a subscription plan. Read More.

A Zephyr perpetual license features a one-time payment to use a specific version of the PASSPORT software indefinitely. Support is provided only for a period of 30 days following the purchase of the PASSPORT software. After that, support is not offered. Further, all future versions of PASSPORT must be acquired through an upgrade payment for each licensed unit of the software. Less than 15% of our customers acquire PASSPORT in this manner.

How is PASSPORT licensed when published from a Citrix Presentation Server or Microsoft Terminal Server?

Some 30% of PASSPORT PC TO HOST users access the Zephyr terminal emulation software from a Citrix platform. Any user with access to the appropriate terminal server can use PASSPORT without having to install and run the software on their local workstation. This model can deliver consider savings in terms of application delivery and management.

This convenience, however, does not eliminate the requirement to secure a software license for each desktop that uses the Zephyr application. Every desktop that uses PASSPORT must acquire either a perpetual or subscription license of the Zephyr software.

Can I use PASSPORT on my home PC or laptop after I leave the office, and is there a charge?

Provided that your organization has a valid license for the use of PASSPORT on your corporate or organizational PC, Zephyr allows you to use PASSPORT on your home PC or laptop at no charge. In most cases, only IT staff members run PASSPORT in this manner.

Do you offer concurrent use licensing for PASSPORT PC TO HOST?

As a standard Windows desktop application, PASSPORT PC TO HOST does not include any metering mechanism, which prevents us from offering concurrent use of the applications.

If you have 100 users or more that require concurrent use of a terminal emulator, you should consider PASSPORT WEB TO HOST, which does include software metering and a concurrent-use option.

Does the license price include support and maintenance?

A subscription license includes technical support, software maintenance and all product upgrades. Read More. Perpetual licensing does not include any support or maintenance.

What maintenance and support plans are provided?
