UNIX® Emulation Client Deployment

There are actually two PASSPORT UNIX® emulation client suites, each offering a different method of deployment.

PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® is web-based UNIX® emulation that includes VT/100, VT/220 and VT/420 host access for UNIX® systems, in addition to TN3270, TN5250, SCO ANSI, Wyse 60 and FTP clients, and is deployed from a web server. The UNIX® emulation client is installed on a web server and provides an administrator program for centralized configuration and administration. All software and configuration files reside on the web server. When the terminal emulator is run, an ActiveX applet is downloaded from the web server to the client desktop and run inside of Internet Explorer. The ActiveX component is only downloaded the first time a session is launched, or whenever the server version of the ActiveX component changes to a newer version. The ActiveX client running inside Internet Explorer makes a direct VT/100 or VT/220 connection to the DEC or UNIX® host system.

PASSPORT PC TO HOST® is desktop-based UNIX® emulation that includes VT/100, VT/220 and VT/420 host access for UNIX® systems, in addition to TN3270, TN5250, SCO ANSI, Wyse 60 and FTP clients. This product is similar to other desktop-based Windows programs. PASSPORT is installed with a Windows setup program. It can also be deployed using SMS, MSI, Citrix or Microsoft Terminal Server.

UNIX® Emulation Connection Support

PASSPORT supports the telnet host access features defined in the IETF Telnet specifications, DEC VT52, DEC VT100, VT220 and VT420 Programmer's Reference manuals. Telnet terminal emulation uses the TCP/IP Internet protocol for communication between a telnet client and a telnet server. PASSPORT is compatible with all DEC and UNIX® hosts that adhere to these specifications. Both 7-bit and 8-bit VT emulation are supported.

PASSPORT provides a method to specify the text string used for the Telnet device type. PASSPORT uses the standard telnet device types "VT52", "VT100", "VT220" and "VT420". However, some VT hosts may require a non-standard telnet device type such as "DEC-VT220". Auto-reconnect is a configurable option that can automatically re-establish the emulator session after a telnet logoff is performed. Hot back up for connection to alternate IP host names is also provided.
