BEA WebLogic Integration with PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® for Host Access
PASSPORT Host Access Can Be Deployed from BEA WebLogic Integration
Zephyr's PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® software, a browser-based terminal emulation program that can be installed and deployed from a web server, can now be used with the popular BEA WebLogic Application Server. PASSPORT provides VT/100, TN3270, 5250 and SCO ANSI host access to IBM zSeries (S/390), IBM iSeries (AS/400) and UNIX® host systems, as well as FTP file transfer.
The host access software is installed on a web server, such as BEA WebLogic, and comes with an administrator program. The administrator program provides centralized configuration and administration of all end user host access sessions. All software and configuration files reside on the web server. When a host access session is started, an ActiveX applet is downloaded from the BEA WebLogic web server to the client desktop and runs inside Internet Explorer, making a direct connection to the host system. The ActiveX
component is only downloaded the first time a session is launched,
or whenever the server version of the ActiveX component changes
to a newer version.
Host Access and WebLogic Integration
When it comes to integration, PASSPORT can be used to integrate VT/100, TN3270, 5250, SCO ANSI and Wyse 60 host applications with other client, server or web applications using any number of API or macro interfaces, including HLLAPI, an object oriented API based on Attachmate EXTRA!® Objects, or VBScript. Most PASSPORT customers use one of the interfaces to cut and paste data to and from the host session, and have the option of using the PASSPORT Object Toolkit, to do the job. The toolkit contains sample source code that can be used to quickly develop code that will improve end-user productivity, and is available for customers who license at least 500 units of PASSPORT via an annual subscription license.
Until recently, PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® was commonly deployed from a Microsoft Windows NT/2000 server with IIS (Internet Information Server) or from an IBM OS/390 system running UNIX® System Services and WebSphere Application Server. After a number of requests to deploy PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® from other web server platforms, Zephyr has tested and certified the use of PASSPORT from the BEA WebLogic Application Server.
The PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® administration program is basically a website that interfaces with a java servlet application. PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® can be deployed to any web application server that can display static web pages and also run java servlets. This includes the BEA WebLogic Server. The BEA WebLogic Server includes a high-performance web server for hosting static content and dynamic web applications. Web applications are a collection of HTML pages, java servlet pages, servlets, java classes, applets, images, multimedia files and other file types. The WebLogic Server also offers J2EE compliant services, web services, enterprise messaging and other services.
BEA WebLogic Server is available on all of the leading Mainframe, UNIX®, Windows and Linux operating systems including IBM zSeries (S/390) and IBM iSeries (AS/400). For more information on the BEA WebLogic Server refer to: http://www.bea.com/products/weblogic/server/index.shtml. Deploying PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® from the BEA Systems WebLogic Server is quite simple. There are basically three steps.
- The PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® administration and deployment website must be transferred to the BEA WebLogic directory where HTML pages are deployed.
- The PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® java servlet files must be transferred to the BEA WebLogic directory where java servlets are deployed
- The BEA WebLogic and PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® configuration files must be edited. After this, the PASSPORT WEB TO HOST® administrator program can then be accessed through Internet Explorer to configure host sessions for deployment. End-Users can then access a website link to start host sessions.
